Barbarossa Derailed: The battle For Smolensk 10 July-10 September 1941 Volume 1
David M. Glantz
The German Advance, The Encirclement Battle, and the First and Second Soviet Counteroffensives, 10 July–24 August 1941. At dawn on 10 July 1941, massed tanks and motorised infantry of German Army Group Center's Second and Third Panzer Groups crossed the Dnepr and Western Dvina Rivers. However, once across the rivers, the Wehrmacht encountered five fresh Soviet armies. Despite destroying two of these armies and severely damaging two, quick victory eluded them. The Soviet force that remained stubbornly refused to surrender, and while they fought on into September, seven newly-mobilised Soviet armies struck back viciously at the Germans. A groundbreaking new study. Volume 2 is due for publication end of the year. 560pp. 107 maps. 40 photos

Battle For Narva 1944
Mansal Denton
Close-up and accurate portrayal of a German soldier’s war in the last months of WWII. The struggle at the Narva bridgehead was typical for combat on the Eastern Front of World War II. German, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Estonian, and even Russian volunteers had enlisted in the German forces to fight against what they perceived to be the looming Communist threat from the east. Whereas other German units had failed to hold their ground in Russia, Heeresgruppe Nord still clung tenaciously to one of the last occupied positions near Soviet territory; the Estonian city of Narva. That toehold was bitterly fought over in arduous winter conditions; Germany hugely outnumbered by their opponent. The city itself would be fought over for months in relentless battles, often erupting into savage close-quarter combat and frequently leading to thousands of casualties. 112pp. 120 photos. 3 maps. tables. Battle In The Baltics 1944-45: the Fighting For Latvia, Lithuania & Estonia, A Photo History
I. Baxter
Battle in the Baltics is an exclusive insight into the last frantic months of the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS on the Eastern Front 1944 – 1945. By early 1944 there was nothing but a drum-roll of defeats for the German Army as it fought to the grim death to try and hold back the overwhelming might of the Russians from reaching the borders of the Reich. It was in the Baltics where Army Group North played a decisive role in trying to stem the rout and preventing the fragile lines from finally being smashed to pieces. 176pp. over 200 photos

BATTLEGROUND ITALY 1943-1945 The German Armed Forces in the Battle for the “Boot"
Franz Kurowski
In September 1943 the Allies landed on the Italian mainland, the so-called “soft underbelly” of Europe. Their aim was to knock Italy out of the war and rapidly conquer the country. However, the Italian campaign was one of the toughest of the war. The Germans, under the inspired leadership of Albert Kesselring, mounted a tenacious and skillful defense in the mountainous terrain. Some of the most brutal battles of the Western Front were fought in Italy, most notably the battles for Cassino which lasted nearly six months. The German forces in Italy did not surrender until 2 May 1945 only 6 days before the end of the war in Europe. There has been little, if anything, published in English on the German viewpoint of the Italian campaign. 545pp. 300 photos

Battleground Prussia - The Assault on Germany's Eastern Front 1944–45
Prit Buttar
In September 1944 the Soviet Army poured into German territory, flooding the martial heartland of the Reich, Prussia. Hopelessly outnumbered by the human wave of the Red Army, the Wehrmacht fought on with determination, but was gradually beaten back. This book describes the great battles that marked the Soviet conquest of Prussia, from Memel to Königsberg, the Heiligenbeil Pocket to Danzig. Using accounts never before published in English, Prit Buttar looks at the campaign both from a command level, and from the perspective of normal soldiers on the front line. 512pp. 16pp. illustrations

Blood Steel Myth The II SS-Panzer-Korps and the Road to Prochorowka
George M. Nipe Jr
Blood, Steel, Myth The II SS-Panzer-Korps and the Road to Prochorowka is a revealing, detailed account of the II SS-Panzer-Korps at Kursk 1943. Based principally on combat reports and first-hand accounts. George Nipe, author of Last Victory in Russia and Decision in the Ukraine, has written a revealing and unprecedented re-analysis of the II.SS-Panzer-Korps' operations during the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943. The book covers in detail the daily progress of Operation Citadel. With meticulous attention to detail the author illustrates the unfavorable circumstances and erroneous command decisions which doomed Germany's last major offensive in Russia irrevocably to failure. The personal notes, conversations and official orders of generals Hausser, Hoth, and Manstein are all closely scrutinized to shed new light on this much celebrated but incorrectly recounted clash of arms. Heavily illustrated with hundreds of rare photos and numerous maps. 496pp. 312 photos. 13 maps. Large format

BRIDGEHEAD KURLAND: THE SIX EPIC BATTLES OF HEERESGRUPPE KURLAND
Franz Kurowski
The exciting account of the little-known struggles of Heeresgruppe Kurland in the waning months of World War II. Despite six separate attempts by the Red Army, the German forces in the Kurland Bridgehead in the Baltic held out against massively superior forces. Despite revisionist claims by the Soviets after the war, the fighting in Kurland resulted in the pinning of large numbers of forces and, ultimately, an unsuccessful campaign. Once again, Franz Kurowski has brought to life many fascinating aspects of an Eastern-Front campaign that has heretofore received little attention in the West 326pp. over 150 photos plus 15pp of maps.

Demolishing the Myth The Tank Battle at Prokhorovka, Kursk, July 1943 An Operational Narrative
Valeriy Zamulin
Examining the battle from primarily the Soviet side, Zamulin reveals the real costs and real achievements of the Red Army at Kursk, and especially Prokhorovka. He examines mistaken deployments and faulty decisions that hampered the Voronezh Front's efforts to contain the Fourth Panzer Army's assault, and the valiant, self-sacrificial fighting of the Red Army's soldiers and junior officers as they sought to slow the German advance, and then crush the II SS Panzer Corps with a heavy counterattack at Prokhorovka on 12 July. The combat on this day receives particular scrutiny, as Zamulin works to clarify the relative size of the contending forces, the actual area of this battle, and the costs suffered by both sides. The costs to General P. A. Rotmistrov's 5th Guards Tank Army and General A. S. Zhadov's 5th Guards Army as they slammed into 1st SS Panzer Grenadier Division Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, 3rd SS Panzer Grenadier Division Totenkopf and a portion of 2nd SS Panzer Grenadier Division Das Reich were particularly devastating. 664pp. approx 100 b/w photos, 16 pages colur photos. DRAMA BETWEEN BUDAPEST & VIENNA, The Final Fighting of the 6. Panzer-Armee 1945
Georg Maier
Georg Maier, the former Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the 6. (SS)-Panzer-Armee, has written not only a monumental history of his former field army but a sweeping account of the little-known fighting on the southern portion of the Eastern Front in the final months of the war. Includes the operations of four different Waffen-SS corps and, by extension, nearly all of the “name” divisions of the Waffen-SS: The 1. SS-Panzer-Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, 2. SS-Panzer-Division Das Reich, 3. SS-Panzer-Division Totenkopf, 5. SS-Panzer-Division Wiking, 9. SS-Panzer-Division Hohenstaufen and the 12. SS-Panzer-Division Hitlerjugend. In addition, many of the most-famous Army armored divisions were involved in this fighting: the 1. Panzer-Division, the 3. Panzer-Division, the 6. Panzer-Division and the 23. Panzer-Division.
Maier starts his narrative with part one of a three-part drama: The brutal and ill-fated fighting to relieve the encircled city of Budapest and the IX. SS-Gebirgs-Korps by Armeegruppe Balck (primarily by the IV. SS-Panzer-Korps). He then follows up with a day-by-day account of the successful but operationally relatively inconsequential Gran Offensive of the I. SS-Panzer-Korps and Panzer-Korps “Feldhernnhalle.” This is follow...

Falaise the Flawed Victory
Anthony Tucker-Jones
The destruction of the trapped German forces in the Falaise pocket in August 1944 is one of the most famous episodes of the Normandy campaign. But myths have grown up around accounts of the battle, and its impact on the course of the war is sometimes misunderstood. Graphic account from the German viewpoint that describes the combat in graphic detail. For two bloody months the Germans held the Allies at bay following the D-Day landings, but then they were blocked in at Falaise and the area became a killing ground. Some liken the event to Hitler's defeat at Stalingrad, while others argue the victory was flawed because so many German troops escaped. 256pp. 50 photos

Hell’s Gate The Battle of the Cherkassy Pocket, January–February 1944
Douglas Nash
New limited re-print edition of this sought after book. It was at Cherkassy where the last German offensive strength in the Ukraine was drained away. 60,000 German soldiers were encircled there at the end of January 1944. This was perhaps one of the most brutal, physically exhausting, and morally demanding battles they had ever experienced. The battle exemplified the cruelty of combat on the Eastern Front. The culmination of years of research, with many interviews with survivors, Hell’s Gate is a riveting hour-by-hour and day-by-day account of this desperate struggle. The battle is analysed on a tactical level, through maps and military transcripts, as well as on a personal level, through the words of the enlisted men and officers who risked the roaring waters of the Gniloy Tickich to avoid certain death at the hands of their Soviet foe. 420pp. 220 photos. 14 maps. Hitler's Last Bastion The Final Battles for the Reich 1944-1945
Franz Kurowski
The final stage of the Second World War, with the enemy across the Reich's borders, saw final desperate battles for numerous "fortified places" and blocking positions. Hitler ordered the defense of these fortified places such as Königsberg and Breslau, Wesel and Kolberg, Danzig, Posen and many others. In these isolated bastions the war-weary German units offered desperate resistance. The fates of German soldiers were realized in bunkers and caves, in tunnels and fields of rubble. In the Hürtgenwald as in the Reichswald, during the crossing of the Rhine between Wesel and Emmerich, in the Remagen bridgehead, on the hill at Keppeln, in the Ruhr pocket, as well as in the east of the Reich in the East Prussian pocket, in Pomerania, in Silesia and in the Reich capital. Shocking scenes of apocalyptic battle were played out wherever Hitler's last bastions held out against the onrushing enemy, whether at the frontiers of the Reich or inside Germany itself. 432pp. 110 photos.

Kampfgruppe Schere im Bild: The Battle of Cholm
Arndt series
This photo album is a re-print of the original 1943 edition. In January 1942, a Kampfgruppe (battle group) at the Eastern front is captured in the city of Cholm. A battle of encirclement begins which lasts for 105 days of fierce German defence against the ceaselessly attacking Red Army. After more than three months, Wehrmacht soldiers managed to drive back the Russians and rescue their Cholm comrades.
The Battle of Cholm is, not as well-known as the famous battles of encirclement like Stalingrad and Demyansk. But the bravery shown by the Wehrmacht forces was not any less in Cholm than in the other places mentioned.
A military decoration, the Cholm medal, was created to commemorate the courageous resistance; only few other decorations of this kind (like e.g. Narvik, etc.) were endowed. 126pp. 160 photos. Large format. German text

Ruckmarsch The German Retreat From Normandy. After the Battle book. 1000 photos/maps

Fantastic book from “After the Battle”. This book covers the Germans as they retreat across France. Although the Germans lost nearly 300,000 men during the retreat - either killed, wounded, missing, or taken prisoner - nevertheless it was not necessarily an Allied victory as by the beginning of September German forces had turned round and were once more standing firm, this time along the 650 kilometres between Switzerland and the North Sea. This, then, is that story told through hundreds of 'then and now' comparison photographs by the author, and which includes some quite amazing discoveries that he made along the way. 376pp. 1000 photos/illustrations. Sacrifice on the Steppe The Italian Alpine Corps in the Stalingrad Campaign, 1942-1943
Hope Hamilton
A human story of courage and endurance; how the Italian Alpine Corps held out to the very end along the Don River. When Germany’s Sixth Army advanced to Stalingrad in 1942, its long-extended flanks were mainly held by its allied armies—the Romanians, Hungarians, and Italians. But as history tells us, these flanks quickly caved in before the massive Soviet counter-offensive which commenced that November, dooming the Germans to their first catastrophe of the war. However, the historical record also makes clear that one allied unit held out to the very end, fighting to stem the tide—the Italian Alpine Corps. 256pp. 16pp photos

SIEGE SIX EPIC SIEGES OF WWII ON THE EASTERN FRONT
Patrick McTaggart
The author has focused on six of the lesser-known sieges of WW II. The bitter defense of the Brest Litovsk Fortress by the Russians in 1941, the frozen Hell of Fortress Kholm , which held out against numerous Russian attacks. the complex operations to capture the highly fortified Sevastopol peninsula. The betrayal of the gallant Hungarian and German defenders of Budapest; the tragedy of Königsberg and the hard-fought, successful defense of Breslau, which held out until after the official German surrender. Utilizing both the latest military technology of the time and historical techniques of siege warfare, the attackers, in most cases, successfully attempted to overcome the fortifications of the defenders. However, in most cases the price of victory was a high one. 240pp. 70 photos/maps

Tanks in the Winter War 1939/1940
Maxim Komolyets
Tanks in the Winter War is a unique book which is based upon Russian sources and therefore stands out remarkably from other books on the market about the Finnish Winter War. Includes concise account of the Soviet units, their equipment and the commanders and operations. You also get an account of the Finnish defense, the fortifications, the obstacles, the mines and the armours etc. Certainly there have been shelves of books written about the Winter War, but none have described the Soviet units and their efforts, and none have described the tanks used in the conflict. 160pp. 32 colour profiles & 130 b/w illustrations. 5 maps

The Battles For Monte Cassino Then & Now: After the Battle title

The Battles For Monte Cassino Then & Now: After the Battle title
Jeff Plowman and Perry Rowe
The Battles for Cassino encompassed one of the few truly international conflicts of the Second World War. A strategic town on the road to Rome, the fighting lasted four months and cost the lives of more than 14,000 men from eight nations. Between January and May 1944, forces from Britain, Canada, France, India, New Zealand, Poland and the United States, fought a resolute German army in a series of battles in which the advantage swung back and forth, from one side to the other. From fire-fights in the mountains to tank attacks in the valley; from river crossings to street fighting, the four battles of Cassino encompass a series of individual operations unique in the history of the Second World War. The Cassino battles, epitomised by the controversial bombing of the monastery which towers menacingly over the battlefield, stand at the centre of the Italian campaign. The dogged defence by a 100,000 men of the German XIV. Panzerkorps under General Frido von Senger und Etterlin, facing a greater multi-national force, was only routed in the end by a gallant French flanking manoeuvre, with the Poles marking the final victory. 408pp. Over 1000 Colour & B/W images. large format

The Korsun Pocket 1944

The Korsun Pocket 1944
Niklas Zetterling & Anders Frankson
Astonishing tale of the breakout from Korsun. Vivid description of one of the most dramatic battles of WWII. However, the Germans were able to avoid serious defeats. Then, in January 1944, a disaster happened. Six divisions of Army Group South became surrounded. The Germans’ greatest fear was the prospect of another Stalingrad, the catastrophe that had occurred precisely one year before. This time, though, von Manstein was in control from the start and he immediately rearranged his Army Group to rescue his trapped divisions. Leading the break-in was Franz Baeke with his Tiger and Panther-tanks. Due to both weather and ferocious resistance, the German drive stalled. Although the Germans within the pocket lost nearly all of their heavy weapons and left many wounded behind, their escape was effected. 320pp. 16pp photos

The Last Rally - The German Defence of East Prussia, Pomerania & Danzig 1944/45
Ian Baxter
Drawing on a superb collection of rare photographs this sequel to Battle in the Baltics 1944-45 covers the last battles fought by the Wehrmacht and their SS counterparts in East Prussia, Pomerania and the West Prussian city of Danzig. Those German forces that had survived the constant Soviet artillery barrages, the onslaught of the tank armadas and mass infantry assaults had streamed back westwards, through East Prussia and beyond, where they continued fighting vicious defensive battles until units either ran out of ammunition or were killed.
The book provides an absorbing insight into this long, most bitter and most unknown Eastern Front campaign. It reveals how the remnants of Hitler`s once-vaunted forces were hurled out of the Baltic States and ordered to wage an unprecedented war of attrition against an overwhelming foe. Here in East and West Prussia, Pomerania and the ancient city of Danzig the Germans stood on the fringes of the Reich and fought a series of colossal battles, being bled white in a desperate attempt to hold together their disintegrating front. 112pp. c160 photos

The Oder Front 1945 Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici, Heeresgruppe Weichsel and Germany's Final Defense in the East, 20 March - 4 May 1945
A. Stephen Hamilton
Germany's final battle began when Generaloberst Gotthard Heinrici took command of Heeresgruppe Weichsel on 20 March 1945. Heinrici, not Hitler, decided that there was only one strategic course left for Germany - hold the Soviets back along the Oder Front long enough to entice the Western Allies across the Elbe River. The author A. Stephan Hamilton describes the planning and execution of the defence of the Oder Front, using previously unpublished personal diaries, post-war interviews, Heeresgruppe Weichsel's war diary and daily command phone logs. In addition to a number of black and white photographs, this study features 64 pages of operational maps reproduced in full colour. 416pp. 35 b/w photos, docs, 21 b/w maps, 64 pages colour maps. The Roer River Battles Germany’s Stand at the Westwall, 1944–45

The Roer River Battles Germany’s Stand at the Westwall, 1944–45
David Higgins
A comprehensive documentation of Germany’s final desperate defence of the Western Front at the end of World War II. Following the Allied breakout from the Normandy beachhead in July 1944, the vaunted German Army seemed on the verge of collapse. As British and US forces fanned out across north-western France, enemy resistance unexpectedly dissolved into a headlong retreat to the German and Belgian borders. In early September an elated Allied High Command had every expectation of continuing their momentum to cripple the enemy's war-making capability, by capturing the Ruhr industrial complex and plunging into the heart of Germany. However, German commanders such as the "lion of defence," Walter Model, continued to reorganise depleted units and mount an increasingly potent defence. 288pp. 16pp photo secion

The Siege of Kustrin 1945 Gateway to Berlin

The Siege of Kustrin 1945 Gateway to Berlin
Tony Le Tissier
The unexpected arrival of Soviet troops at the end of January 1945 at the ancient fortress and garrison town of Kustrin came as a tremendous shock to the German High Command. The Red Army needed the vital road and rail bridges passing through Kustrin for their forthcoming assault on the Berlin, but flooding and their own high command's strategic blunders resulted in a sixty-day siege by two Soviet armies which totally destroyed the town. The delay in the Soviet advance also gave the Germans time to consolidate the defences shielding Berlin west of the Oder River. Despite Hitler's orders to fight on to the last bullet, the Kustrin garrison commander and 1,000 of the defenders managed a dramatic break-out to the German lines. The protracted siege had an appalling human cost - about 5,000 Germans were killed, 9,000 wounded and 6,000 captured, and the Russians lost 5,000 killed and 15,000 wounded. Tony Le Tissier, in this graphic and painstakingly researched account, has recorded events in extraordinary detail, using the vivid eyewitness testimony of survivors to bring the story of the siege to life. 288pp. Now available

WARSAW 2: THE BATTLE AT PRAGA July - September 1944
Norbert Bacyk
The 4th SS - Panzer-Corps vs the 1st Belourussian Front It is a common misunderstanding that the Red Army, on Stalin’s order, halted outside Warsaw in August 1944 to let the German troops suppress the Polish uprising in the capital
The fact is that on the last day of July (the night before the start of the uprising) the Red Army was on its way into Praga (the east part of Warsaw on the east bank of Vistula) when the German troops mounted a violent counter attack. This started the bitter fight that came to be called “The Battle for Praga” and was to continue until the end of September when the Red Army finally conquered Praga. By then it was too late for the Polish resistance inside the city. The fighting was among the toughest and most brutal on the Eastern Front during the war. 272pp. 160 photos/illustrations. 58pp colour artwork. Large format
